The first stonemason on YouTube??
The Pennoyer's restoration project is now featured on YouTube. The team has recorded stonemason Jerry Allen explaining the specialist conservation techniques he has employed during his many months working on the restoration of the Guild Chapel.
The film focuses on the work involved to replicate the medieval render on the external flint walls of the 15th century Chapel. Small patches of original render remained towards the top of the wall. The lower flints had been embedded in cement at some time early in the 20th century. Once that cement had been removed, the flints were quite loose, and had to be stabilised using a natural 'breathable' render that matched the original render.
In this short video, filmed by local resident Walter Pipe, Jerry explains how part of the render process is akin to "cleaning a hippopotamus' teeth". If that doesn't make you watch it, nothing will!
